STARK HOPES TO CONTINUE WINNING WAYS AT ROUTE 66

Last fall, NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Keith Stark laid down one of the most impressive performances in class history with a string of 5.3-second runs to win the NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Illinois. After finishing second in Division 3 standings last year, Stark hopes to continue his winning ways in Joliet and get a run on the Division 3 season during this weekend's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. Stark, from just down the road in Danville, Ill., qualified No. 1 at last year's NHRA Nationals, and ran in the 5.30 zone every round en route to victory, just weeks after winning the prestigious Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. Stark's strong performances have continued this year with a runner-up finish at the Division 4 event in Memphis, and a semifinal finish at the O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Houston. Despite having prior success at Route 66, Stark cites that it is not as easy as just throwing in the same tune up from last fall. "It would be nice if you could just throw the same combination in it," said Stark. "These cars are pretty temperamental. Usually the same tune-up just won't get the job done. We're going to try it and see what happens. If the same tune-up works, it would be great, but it will really surprise me if it does." Not only does Stark want to do good racing in front of his homestate fans, but wants to do well for his new sponsor, Spitzer Coach Works, a new division of Spitzer Race Cars specializing in custom street rod work. "Mike Spitzer has came on board our team with his new company as a sponsor, Spitzer Coach Works," explained Stark. "They specialize in building street rods and high-end automotive custom work. Just as he does with his racecars, he turns out some really nice work. Not only do we want to do well for him, but we are racing in front of our home-state Illinois fans. When you are racing at your home track, it always motivates you to try a little harder." Stark hopes that an early season win in Joliet will give him momentum going into the rest of the Division 3 schedule this year. "Getting some momentum is absolutely critical," stated Stark. "We've been really struggling. Right now it has been really hit and miss. We'll run one good one and five bad ones. We really need to put it together this weekend, as far as the points situation goes and the morale of the team. We just need to go forward." Story courtesy of NHRA.com
