Local NHRA Top Fuel driver, Tony Schumacher, did not run the ?-mile drag strip at Route 66 Raceway; he instead took to the high-banked tri-oval across the street at Chicagoland Speedway with the Richard Petty Driving Experience.

Schumacher spent the day driving the NASCAR Winston Cup Style stock car around the 1.5-mile tri-oval speedway while some lucky fans had the chance to ride shotgun with the 1999 NHRA Top Fuel champion.

"This is one opportunity I did not want to pass up. I enjoy all types of racing and Chicagoland Speedway is in my back yard, so this is a great experience for me," said Schumacher. Schumacher, who resides in Long Grove, Ill. is currently fourth in points for the NHRA Drag Racing Top Fuel Championship.

Making the change from a 6,000 hp Top Fuel dragster to a stock car is no easy task, but Darren Reeves of the Richard Petty Driving Experience said Schumacher has handled it well, 'It's great to have a guy of his status to come out and do some rides for the fans. He has picked-up (racing on an oval track) up very quickly and we certainly appreciate his time, and the race fans love it."

Drag racing fans can see Schumacher at Route 66 Raceway in three short weeks to compete during the Chicagoland Dodge Dealers NHRA Nationals, scheduled for May 30-June 2. Talking about coming home to Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Illinois for the NHRA Nationals, Schumacher says this is the race he looks most forward to. "I always look forward to coming here," Schumacher said. "To me, Route 66 Raceway is the best track on the circuit-the most awesome place to walk up to." Schumacher says fans are in for a great time. "I wouldn't expect anything but an awesome race. If you have never been to a live drag race at Route 66 Raceway-when you hear these monsters, you will not walk away without saying it was a perfect day."
