Tournament of Destruction at Route 66 Raceway

Tournament of Destruction at Route 66 Raceway-Demolition and Fireworks on the Schedule

Saturday Night Demo Derby Includes a Familiar Face to the Route 66 Raceway Drag Strip

(Joliet, Ill. - May 13, 2003) The A-Reliable "Tournament of Destruction" featuring Team Demolition Derby is in it's final preparations for the season opener on Saturday, May 17th at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet. When the green flag falls at 8pm, three new teams will be in the eight team line up. New teams this season include Road Rage, Junk Yard Dogs and new ownership of Team Havoc. This year newer model cars will be smashed to smithereens, including cars from the 1990's.

The elimination races consist of 2 teams on a five laps shootout each around the 1/2 mile dirt oval, but it gets nasty when an opposing team is trying to wipe out the race leader at 50 mph. This adrenaline-pumping event featuring eight pro teams is the story of personal sacrifices, passion and arch enemies. These modern day gladiators hit the track gambling that they'll outrun the Grim Reaper to become the season champion and the representative from America for the World Finals later this summer.

Race fans will also get a chance to win prizes. Following the Monster Truck Exhibition between demo races, Racing Reflections and J&R Cycle of Lombard will have a Monster Drawing for a $400 Sony TV, $400 Mountain Bike, (4) $50 gift certificates and $200 in cash. Don't miss opening night of the "Tournament of Destruction" Saturday, May 17th at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet. American Flags will be given to the first 2,000 people who enter the grandstand gates. A fireworks show will follow after the conclusion of the Demolition Derby.

Tickets for the A-Reliable Tournament of Destruction Demo Derby are $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for children 12 and under.

Guest Appearance by Joliet's Top Fuel Funny Car Driver John Lawson

Local Racer John Lawson will be switching gears this weekend at the TDA Team Demolition Derby at Route 66. Normally Lawson drives a Top Fuel Funny Car on the 1/4-mile Drag Strip at Route 66 Raceway. But this weekend fans are in for a treat as he takes a break from the 300+ mph funny car and takes to the driver's seat of one of the late-model beauties for the team Junkyard Dog.

Speed and danger come together, but this time Lawson won?t be heading down the 1/4 mile straight-a-way, he'll be enduring 50 mph head on collisions that make any grown man cringe.

"I haven't been to a demo derby in about 20 years, I used to do them years ago and it was fun, but I was a lot younger then and it?s going to hurt a lot more this time around," said Lawson. "I'm looking forward to this. When they called me to see if I was interested, I said yes. I never pass up an opportunity to get into a race. I figure I'll be a target. I just hope I get a fast car, and everything heals before the end of the month when I take the Top Fuel Funny Car to the NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway."

Lawson, a Joliet native and dedicated race car driver behind any wheel he sits at, will be participating in the 6th Annual Lucas Oil Route 66 NHRA Nationals May 29-June 1. Tickets are on sale now.
