Tony ?The Sarge? Schumacher?s bid for a third straight victory ended in the semifinals here Sunday with a loss to Larry Dixon at the CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals. The driver of the United States Army Top Fuel dragster actually lost a tiresmoking contest to Dixon, after squeezing by Scott Kalitta, then setting a career best elapsed time (4.464-seconds) on the lightning-fast Route 66 Raceway in a win over Doug Kalitta. ?It was there for the taking against Dixon, but I couldn?t get the car to hook up,? said the Chicago native. ?Given our run against Doug Kalitta, I thought we might have the car to beat today, but this sport has so many peaks and valleys. I guess that was a valley.? Schumacher had entered the event at his home track coming off two big wins at the prestigious U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis and last Monday?s O?Reilly Mid-South Nationals in Memphis. ?While we always want to win, advancing to the semifinals here was a solid accomplishment,? added Schumacher, who moved into third-place in the Top Fuel standings. ?The Army car is running real strong right now. We?ll just head for Reading(Pa.) next weekend and try to get a win over there.? The NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series shifts to Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa., October 4-5, for the re-scheduled Lucas Oil Nationals. Schumacher will go into the weekend holding the number one qualifying position based off a 4.465-second run. He?ll have two more qualifying passes on Saturday, prior to final eliminations on Sunday. Joining Schumacher and the U.S. Army Top Fuel team in Pennsylvania will be U.S. Army Pro Stock Bike riders Angelle Savoie and Antron Brown. While Brown has already worked his way into the Pro Stock Bikes field, Savoie remains on the outside looking in heading into her two Saturday qualifying sessions. ###
