JOLIET, Ill.? Tommy Johnson Jr., who posted a runner-up finish one year ago at the Route 66 NHRA Nationals, suffered a setback during qualifying behind the wheel of his blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo Saturday at Route 66 Raceway. Johnson drove his Skoal Racing flopper to a weekend-best performance of 4.960 seconds at 276.44 mph. However, that wasn?t quick enough to make the 4.909-second bump spot. Mother Nature dashed the hopes of the blue Skoal Racing crew as she blanketed the Chicagoland area with rain and thunderstorms on Saturday. Saturday?s opening qualifying session was delayed to rain and the final qualifying outing was canceled at Route 66 Raceway. Johnson blasted his Chevy flopper to the fourth quickest 1/8-mile elapsed time on Saturday?s only run before shaking the tires and slowing to a pass of 5.203 at 214.72 mph. ?This is the second time this year that the rain has bitten us,? Johnson said. ?The rain got us in Vegas and it got us this weekend. It?s really frustrating because we have a really good race car. We?ll go to Topeka next weekend and try to make some noise there.? Johnson aims to rebound when the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series visits Heartland Park Topeka, May 27-30, for the 16th annual O?Reilly Summer Nationals.
