Kevin Lawrence, a racer from Palos Hills, Ill and a regular at Route 66 Raceway events, put his foot on the gas and his hand on his heart, as he raced against the clock to help a complete stranger. Lawrence, who normally runs NHRA Pro Stock, switched roles by entering Top Sportsman Class at the Division 3 Event at Route 66 Raceway, July 16-18, 2004. As a finalist in the ATR Motorsports Fast Four Shootout, Lawrence was in contention to win a purse of $300.00 donated by Al Thompson of ATR Motorsports. Before the final round, Lawrence measured his luck and thought of others who were not so lucky. Lawrence vowed if he were to win this race, and collect the purse, he would donate half of the winnings to a young woman who recently was injured and in a coma. She was a woman, whom Lawrence had never met, but felt could use a little of his luck that he was so grateful for. Lawrence donated half of his winnings to a young lady who was seriously injured and in a coma after an accident on I-80. Jillian Palenick, a 25 year old from Alsip, Ill., was hit head on by an 18-wheeler while she was a passenger in a van. Having remained in a coma since April, Palenicks family had made sacrifices to support her spirit and health as she steered towards the long recovery path. Lawrence, havening never met, Palenick, wanted to contribute to the families welfare as they tend to her traumatic wounds including a brain injury that has left her in a coma. ?She is a friend of a friend,? stated Lawrence, ?I don?t know her myself and I haven?t met her. But for her to be 25 years old and to be in a coma, that is pretty rotten. I just want people to know about it and hopefully do something to help her too. Her mom has stayed with her through the ordeal, and can?t go to work. Hopefully this will help.? More information about Palenick and how to contribute can be attained by emailing her cousin Lisa at levoy3363@aol.com.
