In just a matter of years, Route 66 Raceway has developed a reputation for being the one track on the 23-race NHRA circuit where you can count on records being set. And rightly so. Earlier this year, the first 330-mph Funny Car pass was recorded at the Illinois track, along with three national performance records. ?Every year, Joliet has proven to be a spot where you can work on getting that extra 20 points for setting the national record, and there?s an excellent chance that you?ll see most teams and drivers set a personal best as well,? Skoal RacingSM Funny Car driver Ron Capps said. Capps, who powered his Don Prudhomme-owned Chevy Funny Car to his personal-best elapsed time (4.753-seconds) at the Joliet track in 2003, looks to better that mark when the NHRA POWERade Series winds down the 2004 season with its final stop at Route 66 Raceway, Sept. 30-Oct. 3, for the fourth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals. "We?re at the point of the season when we hit a swing of race tracks that have such good track surfaces and with the conditions at this time of the year, we know we?ll see records fall,? Capps said. ?The last time we raced at Joliet, we saw the first 330-mph Funny Car pass. This time, there?s definitely a chance we could see the first 6.6-second E.T. from a Funny Car.? Even if that 6.6?second elapsed time doesn?t show up on the scoreboard after one of his passes, Capps would like nothing more than to better his current personal best performance numbers at the record-setting track just south of Chicago. With his new Murf McKinney race car having hit the track for an entire race last weekend in Dallas, along with the 60-degree temperatures that are likely for the first weekend in October near the Windy City, Capps will be challenged to find a better opportunity this season to make a career-best run. ?My new race car is a great car to drive,? Capps said. ?We worked very closely with Murf McKinney to design this new chassis. Our green Skoal Racing team has worked really hard to improve the down force and drag on the body of our Monte Carlo and I?m confident that will show on the race track.? 2004 NHRA Funny Car Point Standings 1.
