Ron Capps, a 14-time NHRA winner, suffered a setback in qualifying with his green Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car Saturday at Route 66 Raceway near Chicago. After racing to the No. 10 qualifying position on Saturday?s first attempt with a performance of 4.895 seconds at 316.89 mph, the veteran driver suffered an engine explosion on his final pass and slowed to a run of 4.947 at 263.31, just missing the 16-car field. This is the second time that Capps missed the cut this season. ?Todd (Okuhara) and Phil (Shuler) did a great job running the car this weekend,? Capps said. ?It?s unfortunate that we missed Friday?s second run because of the rain. We had a pretty good handle on things and the car was improving on each run. We had great numbers on our final pass until the engine let go.? Capps and the green Skoal Racing crew will head back to the Don Prudhomme Racing shop in Brownsburg, Ind. and regroup before they head back to Reading, Pa. to complete the 20th running of the Lucas Oil Nationals, Oct. 8-10, at Maple Grove Raceway.
