Tommy Johnson Jr. powered his blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 8 qualifying position Friday at the Route 66 Raceway after recording a run of 4.873 seconds at 319.29 mph. Johnson used a tune-up from crew chief Mike Green to blast his Don Prudhomme-owned Chevy flopper to the 4.873 at 319.29 blast on Friday?s opening qualifying effort at the Illinois track before the second qualifying session was canceled after rain showers persisted throughout the evening. ?The guys were looking to run a 4.85 and it ran 4.87, so that?s not bad,? Johnson said. ?It?s key to get the weekend started off with a good first run. I think that your weekend is indicative of what you do on that first pass. It should be a good weekend for us and it should be really fast tomorrow.? Johnson aims to move up the Funny Car order when qualifying resumes Saturday afternoon with sessions at 1 and 4 p.m. (CT) at Route 66 Raceway, the track where Johnson earned his Funny Car license.
