SCHUMACHER NOT IN THE FIELD AFTER FIRST DAY OF ACTION RAIN CANCELS SECOND QUALIFYING SESSION

Top Fuel point leader, Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher, failed to make it into the field after the first day of action here Friday for the CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals at Route 66 Raceway. The driver of the United States Army Top Fuel dragster was unable to get down the track in the first session of the day and then watched rain wash away the second qualifying session. As a result, the Chicago native will have to wait for two final qualifying runs on Saturday to try and make the show. "It's unfortunate how things turned out today," said Schumacher. "Weather can be a factor when it comes to qualifying, we all know that. This is a perfect example. But, we're not the only ones in this spot." In fact, besides Schumacher, the rest of the top five in the Top Fuel standings - Doug Kalitta, Brandon Bernstein, David Grubnic and Scott Kalitta - were also out of the 16-car field heading into Saturday. "Now, that's pretty amazing," added Schumacher. "But, I'm confident, if the weather turns out as predicted tomorrow (sunny with temperatures in the high 50's) things will be different by the end of the day."
