JOLIET, Ill. - The staff of Route 66 Raceway this week unveiled modifications to the top end of the quarter-mile track, in just the latest in a series of updates indicative of Route 66 Raceway and Chicagoland Speedway's emphasis on safety.

Route 66 Raceway worked with the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) and University of Nebraska to complete improvements to the trap end and gravel trap of the track.

Updates included:

- The gravel trap was lengthened by 52 feet, bringing the total length to 264 feet at a depth of 16 inches (21,068 cubic feet of gravel).

- 310 feet of permanent and 200 feet of temporary concrete barriers measuring four feet high were replaced along the left and right lanes, respectively.

- A new permanent wall was completed with a ten-foot tall, 3/4-inch steel cable supported, chain link fencing.

- The existing six-foot nylon catch net was removed and replaced by one 8-foot and one 12-foot nylon catch nets, 25 feet apart at the far end of the gravel trap.

- 24 feet behind the second catch net, an 80-foot wide, four-foot tall concrete wall was erected with an array of 150 energy absorbing Department of Transportation sand barrels in front of it.

The track was ready for the arrival of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series' United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals this weekend.

"Safety is a priority for Chicagoland Speedway and Route 66 Raceway, and we strive to provide the best venues possible for racers who compete here," said Matthew Alexander, President of Chicagoland Speedway/Route 66 Raceway. "That includes working closely with the Sanctioning Bodies to make sure our track is up-to-date with the latest recommendations. In the past we worked closely with NASCAR to install SAFER walls at Chicagoland Speedway, and now with the help of our team, NHRA and the University of Nebraska, we've unveiled these improvements at Route 66 Raceway."
