TRACK CHAMPIONS CROWNED AS HAUSLER, EWIG, HEADRICK, PRYKA WIN EVENT

JOLIET, Ill. - Kenny King (Super Pro), Ken Kamba Jr. (Pro), Paul O'Keefe (Sportsman) and Tom Ewig (Bike) were crowned 2009 Route 66 Raceway track champions on Sunday after two days of Rockett Brand Race Fuels ET Bracket Racing action.

King topped the standings with 327 points, edging out Larry Bokal by a mere 12 points. Three weeks ago he was down in the standings and didn't believe he had a chance, he said. This crown will remind him to not give up.

When Kamba looks back on the season, he'll remember “nine points.“ That's what stood between him and runner-up Troy Bogner before the final race of the year. Kamba held him off and earned the title with 410 points while Bogner finished with 372.

O'Keefe, who racked up 385 points to second-place finisher Michael Slaviero's 294, said he'll remember his career-best finish at the NHRA Summit Racing Equipment North Central Division Finals in Indianapolis best - he won five rounds.

And Ewig, who finished the season with 311 points, perhaps had the most memorable finish of all. Like King, Ewig won the Saturday make-up event. Then he won Sunday's rescheduled event title too - to earn the track championship over second-place finisher Robert Sutterlin (272 points).

It was a busy final event weekend of the year at Route 66. Event titles were also up for grabs Sunday, and Don Hausler (Super Pro), Ron Headrick (Pro) and Michael Pryka (Sportsman) joined Ewig in the Winner's Circle.

On Sunday, Ewig rode his 1995 Kawasaki to a 9.707 at 130.86 to Nicole Florey's 10.219 at 128.59.

“I've been coming here ever since the track opened, and it's the first time I've ever pulled (the championship) out,“ said Ewig, a former track champion at Union Grove. “I had to come from behind. I was tied with Robert Sutterlin yesterday. I knew I had to meet him in the finals or have him go out ahead of me. So there was a little pressure. It wasn't in the bag.“

Hausler drove his dragster to a 7.767-second finish at 171.53 mph after a .001 light to claim the win against John Schober's 7.896 at 168.32.

It was his third win at Route 66.

“They were all tough (rounds),“ Hausler said. “I had my hands full but I found where the dial was and had a .000, .004 and .001 (on the tree). That even impresses me!“

The final round in Pro was special as brothers Ron and Wade Headrick met in the final round for the first time in 20 years of racing. Ron Headrick drove his 1963 Nova to a 10.686 at 118.12 after a .010 light, but he didn't need it as Wade broke out with a 10.588 on a 10.60 dial. The two decided before the race they would split their winnings.

“I'm just happy as heck we both made it to the final round,“ Ron Headrick said. “I'm really elated. He's had a tough season. This was probably the funnest race of my life, except when I won the Wally.“

Pryka earned the win with a 14.191 on a 14.19 dial in 96.63 after Dan McCarrin broke out with a 12.098 on a 12.10 dial at 102.99.

“I was very determined because I was in ninth place before yesterday,“ Pryka said. “Then I went one-and-out yesterday and got knocked out (of the top 10). I focused a little better. I breathed deep and focused, and I won everything. I wanted to win today.“
