Joliet, Ill. — December 9, 2014 — Chicagoland Speedway and Route 66 Raceway’s foundation, R.A.C.E., donated $30,222 in grants to five Chicago-area charities at a luncheon on Tuesday, raising its total charitable gifts for 2014 to over $71,000. Those gifts do not include the $246,480 distributed by Chicagoland Speedway and Route 66 Raceway and its concessions partner, Levy Restaurants, through contributions to local service groups acting as staff at the race tracks. All totaled, the organizations were responsible for $317,480 in donations.

“Back in May of 2012, we launched R.A.C.E. with the hope of making a substantial impact in the community. Now in our third year, that hope has become a reality,” said Scott Paddock, president of Chicagoland Speedway and Route 66 Raceway. “Through grants like the ones given out today, scholarships, volunteering hours, and ticket donations, we have been able to contribute hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Joliet and Will County area in three short years. Our staff takes a great deal of pride in supporting the local community, and we’re anticipating an even greater effort in 2015.”

The Bridge Teen Center, George Werden Buck Boys and Girls Club, Make-A-Wish of Illinois, Together We Cope and Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet were selected and recognized for their past notable contributions to the community, as well as their plans for the immediate future. The aforementioned five groups were awarded grants after applying:

  • Together We Cope received a $5,000 donation to provide school supplies and backpacks to underserved families in Will County

  • Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet received a donation of $8,222 to facilitate their “Fun Through Fitness” program, designed to instill motivation in young children for physical activity while providing the tools.

Lastly, The Bolingbrook Explorers Post #38 was presented with a check for over $5,000 for their part in staffing 50/50 raffles at both Chicagoland Speedway and Route 66 Raceway, which made today’s grants possible.

Earlier this year, R.A.C.E. and Joliet Township High School took part in a year-long partnership designed to provide students with hands-on business experience related to Route 66 Raceway’s social media channels. Students spent classroom hours creating marketing agencies, researching demographic information, familiarizing themselves with drag racing, choosing various platforms and formulating a social media plan with the help of bi-weekly classroom visits from Route 66 employees.

R.A.C.E. is a donor advised fund of The NASCAR Foundation, a 501c3 charitable entity. With a focus on youth, safe driving and the military, R.A.C.E. raised funds over the course of the year through community events, raffles and auctions. The three principles guided the seven-member R.A.C.E. Advisory Committee, which was responsible for evaluating grant applications throughout the year.
